This is part of our special feature, The Politics of Postmigration.
In this exhibit, artists Bruno Catalano, Ljiljana Maletin Vojvodić, and Dragan Vojvodić address the themes of mobility, belonging, and home. Curated by Hélène B. Ducros, JD, PhD (University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill), a human geographer whose research has focused on placemaking through heritage-making, landscapes of remembrance and commemoration, and the circulation of cultural models of heritage preservation.

Zehn Jahre Writers in Residence

MEDIA ENCLOSURE: https://multimedia.rtv.rs/audio/Vox humana/2020/11/Vox humana 15-11-2020.mp3

In the modern society of today, the idea of ‘home’ has many diverse implications (‘‘belonging’, ‘mother country’, ‘fatherland’). The ongoing cross-cultural art project has story-telling qualities and poses many questions concerning individual and cultural identity. Ideas surrounding migration, pandemics, globalization; How does the idea of ‘home’ relate to personal and national identity? What is a ‘home country’? When do we truly feel ‘at home’?

Nomadstvo kao imperativ
Između prve i druge knjige mojih Embahada, to jest mog prvog i drugog službovanja u Berlinu, u Beogradu sam živeo trostrukim životom profesora, novinara i književnika.

Former Writer-in-Residence Ljiljana Maletin Vojvodic sent us this video message from Novi Sad and reads excerpts from her recently published novel SKRIK.
While the title SKRIK refers to Edvard Munch’s most famous work, the novel is (pseudo)fiction and (pseudo)biography, manipulating reality and oscillating among factography, intertextuality (Karl Uve Knausgård, Erlend Loe, Tracey Emin, Yoko Ono,Cindy Sherman, Marlene Dumas, Sarah Lucas, Sophie Calle…) and fiction. A novel of ring-like composition with a story within a story.
During her residency at the MQ – MuseumsQuartier Wien, Ljiljana was also working on an art research project titled ‘Post Nora’ art(ist)? or The Discourse of Female Art – find out more about her project and her residency in Vienna in an interview by Julia Stattin here: https://bit.ly/3eZxzxS

Mariam Zakarian, a Danish-Armenian virtual reality artist based in Copenhagen and I met during exhibition ‘Perceptions of Contemporaneity – The Universal Sea’ curated by Sanja Kojić Mladenov and Nicole F. Loeser. ‘Danube Dialogues’ Festival in collaboration with The Museum of Contemporary Art of Vojvodina presented the central exhibition of its festival. It also featured the work of Mariam Zakarian, which attracted a lot of visitors’ attention, so it is my pleasure to speak with her. She is the creator of one of the first Danish VR artworks, ‘Amaryllis VR’, which deals with ‘uniquely human concepts such as mortality, physicality and spirituality channeled through the cutting-edge digital medium of room-scale VR’.

Ljiljana Maletin, DANUBE DIALOGUES // NOVI SAD + > PETROVARADINhttp://danubeartfest.org/web/wp-content/uploads/DD2018-web.pdfOne of the two segments of the accompanying programme of the 6th Danube Dialogues, entitled NOVI SAD+ (featuring the works of visual artists from the contemporary Novi Sad art scene: Goran Despotovski, Mirjana Blagojev, Danica Bićanić and Nikola Macura), was implemented on September 7, 2018 in the Lower Town of Petrovaradin Fortress. The topic of this year’s Festival, “the use of man” (referring to the title of the novel by Aleksandar Tišma, the most acclaimed Novi Sad author of the 20th century) is in fact a metaphor for the power(lessness) of totalitarian regimes, historical debacles and human fall, focusing on artistic expression as opposed to ideology and pointing to the need for introspection, humanity and dialogue. And just as the aforementioned novel by Aleksandar Tišma (1924-2003) requires a serious contemplation, because the reader after finishing the book cannot stop thinking about the described personal and collective experience, so the artists slected for the NOVI SAD+ analyse individual and archetypal problems of the modern age (e.g. issues of identity, absurdity, alienation and destruction in the context of the destiny and position of man in the world, etc.), insisting on interaction and communication. The 2018 ambient installation of Goran Despotovski (1972, Vršac), entitled ASC / DESC (ASCENDING / DESCENDING), is exhibited in the Prostor Gallery. It elaborates on the topic ”Traces of Existence - Fate of the Individual and His Absence” which was part of doctoral fine arts studies at the Academy of Arts in Novi Sad. As the artist himself explains, the installation “shows man’s situation in which the course of his life/fate, his mental, psychological and physical dilapidation is emphasised through the segments dominated by the display of a levitating doll.” Just like Tišma’s novel, the replicated dolls created by Goran Despotovski aim “to encourage us to think, re-examine our lives, our emotions and memories in a time when strategic control of all things that matter in life is increasingly present.” The art installation Hold by Danica Bićanić (1985, Novi Sad), whose artistic explorations are carried out through multimedia, space and audiovisual installations and performances, is exhibited at the Square of Bishop Nikolaj in Petrovaradin, together with the documentary material of her previous work entitled Cycles and the works by Novi Sad artists Mirjana Blagojev and Nikola Macura. Cycles include documentary material created during the artist’s long performance reflecting a perception of everyday life. This performance speaks “about man’s awareness of his own action in the context of the present moment and analyses the nature of that action realised as everyday life from the aspect of personal emotionality”.Cooperation with Dragan Vojvodic (photography, video asociate) http://www.msuv.org/program/2019-03-04-portret-migranta-u-mladosti.php# Dragan Vojvodic and Ljiljana Maletin Vojvodic, MSUV, Novi Sad, 2019.

3 / Suprematistička transmisija – action 3.
.

How can we discuss Kazimir Malevich’s suprematism today? Can we understand performances by Petr Palvensky and Henri Matisse paintings at the same time? Or can we love Victor Pelevin’s prose like we use to love Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky ‘s books? How does art from the 19th or 20th century compare to the contemporary art? Are well known paintings by Matisse reflect only the past? And what characteristics make contemporary artworks a great work or a trash?

”Ljiljana Maletin Vojvodić and Dragan Vojvodić are artists from Novi Sad who visited Tokyo in mid-January within the ‘Kizuna’ exchange programme organised by the ‘Novi Sad 2021’ Foundation in cooperation with ‘EU-Japan Fest’ from Tokyo.By creating bonds (‘kizuna’ = ‘bond’) in the form of cooperation, the Foundation encourages mobility of artists from Novi Sad in order to make city cultural scene more international and to connect local cultural workers and artists with partners from Japan, so that the end result of this type of exchange would create joint cultural and artistic projects.Ljiljana Maletin Vojvodić discussed what residential programmes mean to her, why she recommends them to young artists and what are her impressions of Japan:‘International residential programmes in Spain, Portugal, France, Latvia, Norway, Finland, Sweden and Greenland, in which I have participated since 2006, are integral and unavoidable part of my creation. The possibility to know the ‘Other’ and the ‘Different’ has enabled me to write dozen books, each of them being inspired by the culture of a country I visited thanks to artistic residences. This enabled me to prepare cultural guides to Finland and Sweden, anthology of Norwegian literature, novels that take place in Greenland and Reykjavik, travelogues about Portugal and Catalonia, imagaologial essays about Paris, and numerous articles and blogs about contemporary art. In addition to this, residences have provided opportunities for personal growth, cooperation and friendship with many talented artists, from Island to Japan. This is why I hope, after our visit to Tokyo within the ‘Kizuna’ programme, I will write a book that will motivate young people, especially artists from Novi Sad, to travel; to isolate themselves from everyday life and to get to know an unusual country of developed technology, long tradition and pleasant and gentle people with whom I had a joy to cooperate in this project.’Ljiljana’s husband, Dragan Vojvodić, is a visual artist who also carries positive impressions from this residence, and he conveys the following message to young artists: it is important to move.‘Exchange projects in the USA and Japan (‘Kizuna’) and residential programmes in Iceland, Norway, Finland, Sweden, France, Spain, Portugal, Croatia and Czechia (‘Plants AiR’) have had a great impact on my development, both as an artist and personally; they fundamentally transformed my artistic practice and made me recognisable on the art scene as an artist that creates in-situ using his rich existential experience. It is impossible to create art today without communicating with artists and institutions outside our borders because art becomes more universal and erases attributes that make it local. Mobility is unavoidable in modern age; by travelling and facing the Other, we can get know ourselves and our position in the world more clearly.’

KODE Art Museums of Bergen exhibits one of the largest collections of Munch paintings in the world. From an art historical perspective, the collection is unique because it exhibits works from all the major paradigms in Edvard Munch’s artistic career.
Among others we have many of the important paintings from the “Frieze of Life” – a series of paintings where Munch depicts the psyche of the modern human being. Munch himself described the “Frieze of Life” as the major work of his oeuvre.Jealousy, Melancholy, Women in Three Stages, Evening on Karl Johan and By the Death Bed are all from the “Frieze of Life”, and they are all exhibited together in the Rasmus Meyer Collection in KODE 3

A summer book recommendation
11.07.2016 // All Norwegian literature lovers in Serbia can now enjoy a newly published anthology of Norwegian literature in Serbian published by Orion spirit, Sremska Kamenica-Novi Sad.
Ljiljana Maletin Vojvodic, who has been exploring and writing in the Nordic countries for years, has taken us to a journey through Norwegian literature from Bjørnson to Knausgård.
Her new book entitled “Norway – from Bjørnson to Knausgård” is a compilation of a series of extracts from 60 Norwegian writers along with an introduction essay and original photographs from Norway. These writers have been translated into Serbian and Croatian in the period from 1930-2016.
According to the author, perception of Norway in the Serbian literary tradition is often read or reproduced in the context of positive stereotypes and romantic ideas about the Protestant people of the North that in spite of unfavorable natural conditions have built a progressive cultural and economic society.
Letters from Norway by Isidora Sekulic and perception of Norway as a land of fjords and Hyperborea have greatly influenced the reception of Norwegian literature in Serbia. “Although the picture (image) of Norway has changed, the feeling of something unusual and strange has not been lost from the time when, as [professor] Ljubisa Rajic noted, Knut Hamsun was read as “a kind of Nordic exoticism”, says Maletin Vojvodic.
She added that the idea with this book was not to systematize or to define the Norwegian cultural (literary) identity. Although the order of the sections is in alphabetical order of the surname of the author, there is no linear way of reading it but it is a kind of collage or hypertext, which is open for a variety of readings and specific creative additions.
Ljiljana Maletin Vojvodic is a cultural researcher inspired by travel, visual art, literature and film. She has participated in various international projects in Norway, Finland, Iceland and Greenland.
Her previous book called “A Norwegian story”, was published in June 2013 and it contains passages from works by Norwegian and Serbian writers and researchers who were deeply interested in Norway.
